What is ESG and Why is it Important To Our Community

Our ESG Policy and Creating A Positive Impact with Art

Although an acronym like ‘ESG’ might sound technical – or like some sort of corporate jargon – it’s really about the values that are at the heart of everything we do.

The principle of paying attention to our environmental, social and governance impacts really resonates with Seasons Art Class. A fully defined ESG policy emphasises caring for people and the planet. This aligns well with the values that we have practised since it began in 2009.

Our founder Gen Woodford says:

“Our classes aren’t just about creating art – they’re also about making positive change by building communities. ESG is a framework that shows how we look after our environment, support our community and ensure ethical business practices – all while keeping our students’ wellbeing at the centre of what we do.”

In this blog, we’ll provide more insight by explaining what ESG is and why it is important as well as sharing details of our values and what we do to uphold them.

What is ESG and Why is it Important?

ESG stands for Environmental, Social and Governance – a set of standards that demonstrate how a company operates in a responsible and ethical way:

  • Environmental

This focuses on the company’s impact on the planet. It includes strategies to reduce waste, lower carbon emissions, promote sustainability and conserve natural resources. Where relevant, policies may also cover how the company manages associated environmental risks such as pollution or waste production.

  • Social

This emphasises how the company interacts with people. Whether it’s employees, customers or the wider community, the policy is people-focused. Fair labour practices, employee wellbeing, community engagement, diversity and inclusion, charitable giving and human rights are all part of social responsibility.

  • Governance

This covers how the company is managed and its ethical practices. This includes accountability and transparency as well as factors like fair pricing, honest communication and data privacy.

Crafting Art with Care: Our Environmental Responsibility

Seasons Art Class prioritises eco-friendly practices to minimise our environmental impact and divert waste from landfills. We always try to make thoughtful and considered decisions that ensure our art classes are as sustainable as possible:

  • Sustainable materials

Our starter packs include recycled and eco-friendly materials such as paper made from recycled coffee cups and bamboo rulers. Instead of the traditional toxic solvents, we use Zest-it – a citrus-based, eco-friendly cleaner that smells like fresh fruit and not harsh chemicals.

  • Waste reduction

We’ve taken various approaches to minimise our waste. For example, we use tear-off palettes to prevent the plastic particles of artists’ materials from entering waterways, once the paint is no longer needed. We also encourage our students to make DIY ‘stay-wet’ palettes from repurposed containers and save unused acrylic paint by putting their tear-off palettes in airtight containers so that it can be used again and won’t dry out in between. This means fewer tear-off palettes are used and we are recycling containers instead of purchasing more plastic.

  • Energy-conscious venues

We always aim to use modern, energy-efficient community spaces to limit the need for excessive heating. We serve hot drinks and encourage students to bring cosy items, like blankets or shawls, to ensure everyone is relaxed and comfortable while also being sustainable.

Art & Connection: Our Social Responsibility

We believe art is for everyone and we work hard to ensure our classes are as inclusive as possible.

As well as fostering inclusivity, we nurture mental wellbeing and encourage connection and community engagement. Our classes help students feel connected and valued:

  • Support and friendship

Many of our students are retirees who may be looking for connection, or a sense of community, in addition to learning a new skill. We welcome people of all ethnicities, backgrounds and abilities. We understand that everyone has unique needs – especially within the slightly older age bracket. Our tutors and assistants create a warm, welcoming atmosphere where every student can feel valued and supported. Click to read about how friendships are made at Seasons Art Class.

  • Celebrating achievements

We hold end-of-course exhibitions where our students can share their achievements with their loved ones and the local community.  It’s a wonderful moment of celebration, connection and confidence-building that students often look forward to. It is wonderful to see their efforts shared and appreciated.

  • Charitable giving

Our head office engages in charitable giving. This last year, we have contributed over £6,000 to causes such as Horizon Scandal Fund, Centrepoint, the NSPCC and Great Ormond Street Hospital. As our business grows, we will continue to support those in need.

  • Supporting local business

We established a partnership with Seawhite of Brighton when we first started Seasons Art Class and we’ve sourced our high-quality art supplies from this local, family-owned business ever since. The company is run by three brothers who have been in the art supply industry for over 30 years. Our relationship with them has grown as we’ve both expanded. Supporting a British business that aligns with our values is incredibly important and we’re proud to work with Seawhites to provide quality, locally sourced materials to our students.
