The Importance of Experimentation in Art and Finding Your Own Voice

You don’t need to be ‘a natural’ to start learning art. Forget the idea that people are either born with artistic talent or not. The truth is, nobody knows how to draw or paint until they’re shown how. Just like driving a car or learning to cook, it can feel unfamiliar at first — and that’s completely normal. But with step-by-step guidance, practice, and a little patience, those first uncertain marks on the page start to turn into something wonderful. Over time, your confidence grows, your hand becomes steadier, and what once seemed difficult starts to feel natural. That’s exactly how we teach at Seasons Art Class — guiding absolute beginners, one small step at a time, to discover skills they never thought they had. Read on to see how easy it is to begin your creative journey.

How Experimentation Transforms Your Art

Experimentation is where your creativity starts to grow. It’s completely natural to want to copy other artists’ work when we’re just starting out, we often don’t yet have the skills, techniques, or creative mindset to invent something original from scratch. That’s why in our classes, we always start by demonstrating a project first, showcasing all the techniques within the project and from there, we actively encourage you to experiment to try those techniques for yourself, play with colour choices, adjust shapes, and make the piece your own. Bit by bit, as you build confidence, you’ll find your own creative style gently emerging, often without even realising it, and that’s where the real joy of art begins.

What it Means to Creatively Explore

As you continue to practice and try out new materials, colours and techniques, something wonderful starts to happen – you stop worrying about what’s ‘right’ or ‘wrong’, and start discovering what you personally enjoy. You don’t need to follow strict rules or stick to one style. Instead, you can simply enjoy the freedom to experiment, play, and see what happens. Often, the best results appear by happy accident! With every piece you create, you’ll find your confidence growing, and over time, your own natural style will gently start to take shape, even if you don’t notice it happening at first!

That’s why, when you come to us, we ask you to date everything you create, even the quick warm-up sketches. We encourage you to keep them all, no matter how you feel about them at the time and for good reason! It allows you to see your own progress. On days when you feel frustrated or hit a creative block, looking back at where you started can be a wonderful reminder of how far you’ve come. You’ll often surprise yourself by how much you’ve improved, often without even realising it. This little habit helps to bring back your calm, your confidence, and your motivation to keep going, and before long, you’ll have a collection of work that tells the story of your artistic journey and progress, and paintings you are proud of!

In class, you’ll get to try lots of different materials and discover what you enjoy most.

When you first join us as a beginner, we take you gently through the four main art mediums: drawing, oil pastel, watercolour and acrylics. This gives you a chance to build solid foundations and experience a real variety of techniques, even if you’ve never picked up a paintbrush before! As you move on to further courses, we keep things fresh and interesting by introducing extra materials too – things like coloured pencils, charcoal, ink, gouache and more. This way, you’re constantly learning and discovering what you most enjoy, while building up a wonderful set of skills that you can carry forward into your own creative projects at home or with your new art friends.

Inspiration comes from Many Places and We Make Sure You’re Surrounded by Plenty of it.

When you join our classes, you’re not just learning from your tutor, you’re also part of a wonderfully supportive group of fellow students. Many of our best project ideas have come directly from student suggestions over the years, and with over 120 tutors across the country contributing ideas too, there’s always fresh inspiration flowing in from the front lines! In each class, while we demonstrate one version of the project, we also provide a wide range of visual aids and reference materials for you to choose from. You might decide to follow the demo piece, or you might feel inspired to try a different image or colour palette, it’s entirely up to you. We also often look at other artists work to spark creative ideas, so, whether you’re working from life, photographs, or examples from other artists, you’ll have plenty of freedom to explore what excites you most!

Mistakes are Part of the Process and Often Lead to Your Best Work.

One of the most important things we remind our students is this: It is absolutely fine to make mistakes, and that’s why coming to a class where we can show you how to fix it is so important. You won’t get that from a book or online class! Mistakes are how you learn – well, if you’re in the right environment anyway! Nobody gets everything right the first time, and very often, what starts as a mistake, if unfixable, can end up turning into something interesting or unique, even if not what you were aiming for. That is where creativity lives, in the happy accidents, the little surprises, and the things you did not plan. In class, we will always encourage you to have a go, experiment, and not worry too much about getting it perfect. Every brushstroke is simply part of your journey, and you will be amazed how often the things you thought went wrong become the parts you love most.

A Warm, Welcoming Space to Learn, Grow and Make New Friends!

At The Seasons Art Class, we believe that learning art is not just about brushes and paints, it is about people. Our classes offer a relaxed, friendly and supportive environment where you are gently guided by experienced tutors, surrounded by like-minded people from your local area. Many of our students arrive as complete beginners and go on to surprise themselves with how much they achieve (some end up creating artwork treasured by family and loved ones). Over time, it often becomes so much more than just an art class. Friendships are made, coffee dates are arranged, and many students even meet up during the week to paint together. It starts to feel like being part of a club you genuinely look forward to each week. It’s a happy place to relax, switch off from the busy world, and do something entirely for yourself.

Many of our branches have students who have been attending for years, returning season after season because they love both the learning and the lovely sense of community. You do not need any experience to join us, just a willingness to have a go and we’ll be with you every step of the way.

If you would like to hear what our students say in their own words, do have a look at the testimonials. Nothing says it better than hearing directly from the people who have already taken that first step and discovered how rewarding it can be.

In the words of Vincent Van Gogh, “If you hear a voice within you say ‘you cannot paint,’ then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.”

If you are ready to give it a try, we would love to welcome you. You can book a class by calling 02080 644 744 or emailing info@theseasonsartclass.com. Your creative journey starts here.
